LEO Academy Firearms Prep Class

Description

This course is specifically designed for individuals pursuing a career in law enforcement or corrections, as well as current academy recruits looking to strengthen their firearms proficiency. Focused on the fundamentals of marksmanship, the program emphasizes the skills required to pass the FDLE Recruit Academy Firearms Course. Through a structured mix of dry fire and live fire drills, participants will build confidence, accuracy, and control—ensuring they perform at their best under pressure.

Objectives

  • Improve shooter proficiency and effectiveness.

  • Master marksmanship, gun handling, and shooting techniques.

  • Build skills through repetition, drills, and assessments.

    • Recoil Management

    • Reloading

    • Draw, Load, Holster Drills

    • Low/No light shooting

  • Prioritize safety in all marksmanship challenges.

  • Successfully apply immediate action for phase one and phase two malfunctions.

  • Successfully complete day time 38 round course of fire. 

  • Successfully complete night time 18 round course of fire. 

  • Achieve performance goals through focused training. 

  • Strengthen shooting strong hand and support hand.

  • Strengthen ability to shoot on the move and from cover.

  • Successfully complete active-shooter and discretionary drills.

Requirements

  • Students must possess the ability to SAFELY handle and load/unload a handgun. Those with previous

    law enforcement and military training generally do meet these class prerequisites.

Requirements

  • Pistol in the following calibers: 9MM

  • 600-800 rounds in your weapon caliber

  • Kydex belt or paddle holster (NO Blackhawk Serpa holsters)

  • A minimum of 3 magazines (5-6 recommended)

  • Mag carriers/pouches for 3 reloads

  • Wraparound eye protection – may shoot steel, you will need high-quality, mission specific eye protection

  • Hearing protection (electronic is recommended, but not required)

  • Pistol cleaning and maintenance kit

  • Personal small first aid kit

  • Food, Snacks, Lunch items (bottled water provided)

Notes

Ensure you wear and bring clothing appropriate for the weather. BDUs, or canvas type pants are recommended. Prepare for warm sunny conditions and overcast cool conditions. Bring sunscreen, lip balm and insect repellent. Bring a baseball cap, wide-brimmed hat, or stocking cap as appropriate. No open-toed shoes, tank tops, or other sleeveless shirts permitted. We recommend packing a few protein snacks and bringing your own lunch. We will be working through, but you will have time between sets to grab a bite. Class begins at 9AM and will be completed by 5PM.
